Looking Backwards To Move Forwards…How HBR Reclamation Aligns With The UN Global Compact

At HBR Reclamation, we believe that the past holds the answers to building a better future. Our tagline, “look backwards to move forwards”, reflects not only our passion for heritage and sustainability, but also our commitment to working in line with the principles of the UN Global Compact.

The Compact asks businesses around the world to align their strategies with ten universal principles on human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption, and to take action in support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For us, this isn’t just theory , it’s embedded in how we work every day.

Here’s how we contribute in four of the key areas:

Quality Education (SDG 4)

We are passionate about passing on knowledge. Through The Heritage Gap, our networking and apprenticeship initiative, we share traditional skills with the next generation. By educating young people about sustainable construction, careful material use, and heritage preservation, we ensure that vital skills are not lost. This hands-on learning equips them for meaningful careers and strengthens the future of our industry.

Gender Equality (SDG 5)

Construction and reclamation have historically been male-dominated sectors, but at HBR Reclamation we are breaking down those barriers. We actively promote equal opportunities in our team, our partner networks, and our training initiatives. By creating an environment where skills, ideas, and effort matter more than stereotypes, we are helping to build a sector where everyone has the chance to thrive.

The Circular Economy

Our entire business is rooted in the circular economy. By sourcing, reclaiming, and repurposing quality building materials, we reduce waste, cut down on unnecessary production, and give new life to items that would otherwise be lost. Each piece in our yard tells a story, and by reusing what already exists, we lessen the demand for new resources whilst celebrating craftsmanship from the past.

Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12)

We encourage clients and communities to rethink how they approach building. Instead of defaulting to new and mass-produced, we offer responsibly reclaimed alternatives. Every item in our yard is picked with care, ensuring that it’s not only practical but also sustainable. This careful approach reduces environmental impact whilst promoting mindful, responsible choices in both design and construction.

Our Commitment

At HBR Reclamation, our work is more than materials and buildings, it’s about values. By aligning ourselves with the UN Global Compact and the Sustainable Development Goals, we aim to ensure that what we do today leaves a positive legacy for tomorrow.

Because when we look backwards to move forwards, we honour the past, enrich the present, and build a sustainable future.
